The Rhine-Alpine corridor north of Basel is reaching its capacity limits, which will probably not be resolved until the 2040s. The route via France is therefore an important alternative for SBB Cargo International's transport operations.
The establishment of the fifth subsidiary with an operational base in Yutz/Thionville will enable SBB Cargo International to grow in the future. Thanks to SBB Cargo France, however, the company can now also operate services on the left bank of the Rhine, thus minimising cancellations in the event of infrastructure bottlenecks in Germany and offering customers the corresponding resilience.
While SBB Cargo France has employed its own train drivers, Swiss train drivers have also undergone intensive training for the French network. In future, part of the team will operate national routes, while the other part will be able to operate both national and international routes. This will significantly increase the flexibility and efficiency of operations, as interoperability is a key success factor in international rail freight transport.

With the establishment of the Dutch subsidiary in 2019, SBB Cargo International has confirmed its market leadership on the north-south corridor and its position in the Netherlands. The establishment of a wholly owned subsidiary will further strengthen the position of SBB Cargo International. Quality will be enhanced thanks to cross-border execution and planning of trains on the entire Netherlands-Italy corridor.
Based on proven and professional recruitment, the Dutch subsidiary will recruit its own locomotive drivers locally. SBB Cargo Deutschland's interoperable drivers are also being deployed in the Netherlands.
